Retaining walls, steps, walkways and radiant heated driveways built to hold the grade through Utah winters.

Hardscape is the structure of an outdoor space: the walls that hold back a slope, the steps that get you from one level to the next, and the walkways and patios that tie it all together. We build board-formed concrete walls, stone and boulder walls, concrete steps, walkways and patios, and we plan them with the grading and drainage behind them in mind. Utah winters are hard on concrete and stone, so we pay close attention to the base, the drainage and the details that help hardscape hold up over time.

Snowmelt systems

Radiant heated driveways

A radiant (snowmelt) system keeps a driveway clear on its own. Hydronic tubing or electric heating cable is installed under the concrete or pavers and warms the surface, so snow melts and ice doesn't form. It works for driveways, walkways, patios, steps and entries, and it's easiest to add when the surface is being built or replaced.

We completed a radiant heated driveway at the Millcreek Residence, and we’re currently installing one at the Suncrest Residence. See the Millcreek Residence →

FAQ

Common questions

What kinds of retaining walls do you build?
The walls shown on this page are board-formed concrete, stone and boulder. The right choice depends on the height of the wall, the look you want and the site.
Do retaining walls need drainage?
In general, yes. Water building up behind a wall puts pressure on it, so drainage behind and below the wall is part of planning one.
Do taller walls need engineering or a permit?
It depends on the wall height and your city. Taller walls can require engineering and a permit, and we will go over what applies to your project.
Can you add steps to an existing slope?
Yes. Steps are often built into a slope along with walls and grading, with railings where they make sense.
Can hardscape and landscape be done together?
Yes. We often plan the walls and walkways together with the planting around them.
